An outdoor sensor wall light is a light fixture that is designed to automatically illuminate an area when movement is detected in the area. They are usually installed around entrances, such as gates, garages, side passages and patios.

Outdoor motion sensor light fixtures use a sensing mechanism, most commonly in the form of passive infrared, or PIR. The fixture uses those built-in sensors to monitor heat signatures, and the light will turn on or off accordingly.

Exterior sensor lights tend to be incredibly energy efficient. This is because they only turn on when there is movement in the area instead of constantly staying on. Not only this, but the LED bulbs featured in modern security lights are also inherently energy efficient.

Where you place your outdoor sensor lights matters a great deal. You should aim to position the fixture where the sensor will have a straightforward "view" of the area in order to detect and respond to movement. You'll also want to place it so the light shines over the area you want to keep an eye on, such as entryways.

It is generally recommended that you install the wall lights at an approximate height of 1.8 to 2.4 meters above the ground. Any higher than that reduces sensor sensitivity, while placing it too low can trigger false positives.
