How to Position Exterior Step Lights

Exterior step lights can be placed directly in the stair risers or
mounted on the wall beside the steps. Riser‑mounted lights provide focused
illumination across each tread, helping users see the edge of every step
clearly. Wall‑mounted external step lights work well when recessing into the
riser isn’t possible, offering a wider wash of light along the staircase. In
both cases, position the fittings low and angle the beam downward to minimise
glare and create a safe, comfortable route.

What IP Rating Should Exterior Step Lights Be?

Outdoor stair step lights need a suitable IP rating to withstand rain,
moisture and debris. The IP rating shows how well a fitting is protected: the
first digit refers to resistance against dust, and the second digit indicates
protection against water. Because exterior stair lights sit low to the ground
and face frequent exposure to the elements, an IP65 rating or higher is
generally recommended. This ensures the lights are dust‑tight and protected
against water jets, helping them perform reliably outdoors.

How to Maintain Exterior Step Lights

External step lights need simple but regular care to keep them performing
well outdoors. Wipe the fittings with a soft cloth to remove dirt, leaves and
debris that can build up around the lens. Check for water ingress, especially
after heavy rain, and ensure seals and gaskets remain intact. It’s also helpful
to clear any plants or soil that may block the light output. For LED exterior
step lights, maintenance is minimal, but inspecting the wiring and fixings once
or twice a year helps ensure long‑term safety and reliability.

How Many Lights Should I Use on Each Step?

Most outdoor stair step lights don’t need to be installed on every single
step. Instead, the goal is to create safe, even illumination without glare.
Many installers place a light on every third or fourth step, adjusting based on
the staircase length, width and surrounding ambient light. If steps are
particularly dark or uneven, you may choose closer spacing for added safety.
Whether mounted in the riser or on the wall beside the steps, focus on
consistent coverage rather than lighting each tread individually.
