Why it is Important to Buy High-Quality Outdoor Lighting

The quality of the external lighting you buy matters. Though the price might be a little higher up front, you’ll save money in the long run by not having to constantly replace them.

By using top quality landscape lighting from the jump, you can get off on a good foot. Choose lights made from stainless steel or aluminium that won’t rust or corrode. Also, make sure the lights are solidly built with good seals and durable glass for the lenses.

Shopping at a reliable supplier will also give you peace of mind that the wiring is durable. This reduces the risk of short circuiting. Quality bulbs will also eliminate any flickering or inconsistent illumination like you might get with lower-quality LEDs.

How LED Exterior Lighting Can Save You Money

Outside LED lights are quickly taking over as the preferred light bulb type for homeowners and business owners alike. Compared to traditional bulbs, they are capable of saving you a lot of money on your bills and beyond.

Modern outdoor lighting that uses LED bulbs will save massive amounts on energy expenditure. These lights use up to 80 percent less energy than their traditional counterparts, stretching their usage for longer periods of time.

Since they output minimal heat, have no filament to burn out and are durably designed, LEDs can last ten times longer than traditional bulbs. You can expect your house outdoor lights with LED bulbs to last for 20,000 hours or more. Compare this to the 1,000 or so hours from a halogen bulb.

Longer lifespans mean you will have to replace the fixtures less regularly. This, in turn, translates to fewer upfront costs when lighting your outdoor space.

How Bright Does Garden Lighting Need to Be?

The right brightness levels can make or break the appearance and atmosphere of the garden. LED exterior lighting has the benefit of coming in a number of different lumen counts, so you can customise it to the exact brightness you want your outdoor living space to be.

Different zones in the garden may require different types of lighting, from bollard lights on pathways to flood lights over driveways. As such, they will all have different requirements as far as lumen counts go.

If you are unsure as to where to start when lighting your garden, follow the general guidance for various areas below.

  • PATHWAY AND STEP LIGHTS: 50 to 200 lumens per light
  • LANDSCAPE LIGHTING: 100 to 300 lumens per light
  • DECK AND PATIO LIGHTING: 200 to 500 lumens total
  • FLOOD AND SECURITY LIGHTING: 500 to 1300 lumens, depending on the purpose
  • DRIVEWAY LIGHTING: 300 to 800 lumens per fixture

Why IP Rating is Important for Garden Lighting

Outdoor lighting is unique from interior lights in that they are exposed to the elements constantly. Without proper protection, your exterior lighting could rust or otherwise become compromised by moisture and debris.

IP ratings help you navigate these risks. IP ratings, or Ingress protection ratings, are a way to indicate how well a light resists entry of moisture and debris. The first digit indicates the resistance to solids, while the second indicates its resistance to moisture.

First Digit – Solids

0 – Does not protect against solid materials

1 – Will protect against entry of solid objects that are 50 millimeters or larger

2 – Will protect against entry of by solid objects that are 12 millimeters or larger

3 – Will protect against entry of by solid objects that are 2.5 millimeters or larger

4 – Will protect against entry of by solid objects that are one millimeter or larger

5 – Offers dust protection

6 – Completely dust tight

Second Digit – Moisture

0 – Does not protect against moisture

1 – Will protect against vertically falling water drops

2 – Will protect against falling water drops at a maximum angle 15 degrees

3 – Will protect against falling water drops at a maximum angle 60 degrees

4 – Will protect against splashing or projection

5 – Will protect against low pressure jets

6 – Will protect against high pressure jets

7 – Will protect against temporary immersion

8 – Will protect against long periods of immersion

When it comes to outdoor lighting, having IP65 rated lights or higher will give the best protection.
