Pendant Lighting

Pendant lighting is an easy way for you to cast ample illumination across large sections of space while also decorating the room itself. Hanging pendant lights are as diverse, decorative and unique as any other type of lighting. This leaves you plenty of opportunity for decor. When you use LED pendant lights, in particular, you open yourself up to the benefits of LED lighting as well.

How to Use Pendant and Ceiling Lights for an Open Plan Living Space

In a house that has fewer walls separating the different rooms, you need a good way to do so visually. Using ceiling lights for open plan living spaces can be a good way to zone out the different areas of the home.

For example, hanging pendant lights over kitchen islands and breakfast bars can draw attention to those aspects of the room–ones that clearly define the space as meant for cooking. Similarly, a large pendant light over the dining table indicates that it is an area meant for eating meals.

Choosing less obvious lights for the living space will separate it out as well. Recessed lights with a softer glow can make it clear that the room is a different zone entirely. Dimmable pendant lights in the living room will allow you to even more easily set the space apart from its brighter counterparts.

Even with the different types of interior pendant lighting throughout the house, you can still create a seamless design that flows throughout the space. Do so by sticking to a certain theme, depending on the style of your home.

For example, metallic, minimalistic indoor pendant lights in modern homes, or crystal and glass pendants in more traditional spaces. Industrial-style decor benefits from exposed bulbs and rustic finishes like copper or aged brass.

How to Use Pendant and Ceiling Lights in a Small Space

When it comes to smaller rooms, the best LED pendant lights are going to be the ones that minimise the amount of space they take up.

Creating an illusion of more space is rather easy to do if you use the right modern pendant lights. Using bright lights with high lumen counts will flood the room with plenty of light and avoid dark corners.

Choosing fixtures with reflective finishes or adding in mirrors can help bounce the light around without any additional fixtures. Similarly, using light colours to decorate the room will help reflect light and make the space seem larger.

If you want to add in the charm of stylish pendant lighting in a small space, you can do so with mini pendant lights. Hanging these lights as task lighting over reading nooks or side tables will make the most out of the space while still providing ample lighting.

Do LED Hanging Lights Require Any Maintenance?

Because of the remarkably long life of LED pendant lights, they will require very little maintenance if any. LEDs have a minimum rated life of 20,000 hours as opposed to the 1,000 hours of a standard bulb, so you can mostly install them and forget about them. All that is needed is an occasional dusting to remove dust and cobwebs.

Before you clean the lights, be sure you turn off the source of electricity by way of the switch so that you don’t accidentally shock yourself. If your pendant light is high up, be sure you use a ladder or step ladder to reach it instead of trying to access it from your stairs or an unstable surface or stool. Cleaning the bulb itself can be done just by removing it and wiping it off with a dry, non-abrasive cloth to get the dust off of it.

Are Pendant Lights Still On Trend?

Because pendant lights technically fall into the category of accent lighting, some people worry that these types of accents are not as stylish as they once were. Hanging pendant light fixtures are as trendy as they ever were. In fact, they are seeing a spike in popularity these days.

Pendant lights are some of the most sought-after lighting options for rooms, especially in a kitchen. Mid-century and industrial modern pendant lights have taken centre stage as some of the most stylish additions to a room. They are so beloved that they are often used as a focal point in a space by using a dramatic pendant style.

Since every home is different, it is impossible to name what might universally be considered the best LED pendant lights for every home. Even so, there is one thing that remains true regardless of your design style: LED lights are the way to go.

Not only do many LEDs afford the ability to dim them, keeping you in control of the brightness at any given time, but they also have practical benefits as well. Alongside the adjustable ambience, dimmable LEDs provide energy efficient ceiling lighting that will last longer than traditional bulbs.

LEDs are rated for use for tens of thousands of hours as opposed to the 1,000 hours you can expect from traditional light sources. This is because they use 80 percent less energy than halogen or incandescent bulbs.

Their efficient energy consumption also makes them friendlier on the environment and on your wallet. Since their long life means fewer replacements are needed, you won’t have to spend as much money on new light purchased, either.

The size of the pendant lights must be considered in relation to the size of the room or furniture you want to place them above. Below are some tips on choosing pendant lights in the appropriate size.

Pendant Size:

  • Add together the width and length of the room. Divide that number by 12 to find the best pendant width.
  • Measure the room’s height and multiply it by three. Divide that number by 12 to find the best pendant height.

Hanging Pendants Above a Table or Island

  • If you want to install breakfast bar lights the kitchen, you’ll first need to measure the diameter or the width of the surface. Take 12 away from that number, and you’ll arrive at the maximum suitable width for the island pendant lights. Keep in mind that a fixture that has a complex design will look larger and eye catching, so if you don’t want it attracting too much attention, you may want to use a smaller width than even that.
  • When hanging the pendants, begin with them approximately 85 centimeters above the surface. Be sure to consider the line of sight of those who will be near the lights, so no one has to deal with glare or worry about hitting their head on the light.
  • Space the pendant every meter or so above the counter.
  • Smaller surfaces no longer than two meters look fine with two medium pendants or one large pendant. Islands two meters or longer look fine with three medium or two large pendants. Over a dining table, arrange pendants in a row with a space of 71 to 91 centimeters from the tabletop to the bottom of the pendant.

Hanging Pendants As Ambient Light

  • Begin by adding the length and width of the room to determine the best diameter for the light fixture you want to install. A good rule is to have ceiling pendants hanging at approximately 50 centimeters below a 2.5-meter-high ceiling. For every additional 30 centimeters of ceiling height, add 8 centimeters to the hanging level.
  • In entrance halls and hallways, hang the lights at least 15 centimeters higher than the top of the front door.

Colour temperature, or CCT, is how manufacturers discuss the warmth or coolness of a light. It exists on a spectrum between 1,000 and 10,000 Kelvin, with warmer lights toward the bottom and cooler lights at the top.

Both light colour ranges have their place. In residential spaces, most people prefer to have warm white light between 2700K and 3300K. This provides a more relaxing vibe while still being bright enough to see. That said, those who prefer more vibrant, energising lighting may prefer to use cooler lights around 4000K.

Pendant lights are fixtures that are used for area lighting, general lighting and even task lighting. They are mounted to the ceiling and hang by way of a chain, rod or cable. A pendant light gets its name from the fact that the lights are suspended much like a pendant on a necklace. The main difference between a chandelier and a pendant light is that chandeliers have multiple bulbs incorporated into one fixture, whereas most of the time, pendant lights only have one bulb.

Their versatility makes them easy to incorporate into any room of the house, and in most cases, you don’t even need an electrician to install them. Some pendant lights even have a long cord that can just be plugged into a wall outlet somewhere near the light.

Beyond their easy installation and decorative appeal, LED pendant lights have another perk: LED bulbs. LED lights bring with them an advantage over typical light bulbs, such as halogen bulbs. When you use LED bulbs, you’ll benefit from the following features:

  • ENERGY EFFICIENCY. Whereas halogen bulbs output 70 percent of their energy as heat, LED bulbs are capable of turning 90 percent of their energy into power. This is great not just for the environment but also for your electricity costs.
  • MODERN, STYLISH LOOK. LED is a modern style of light bulb that you’ll find in equally as modern pendant lights. Using these lights, you can add plenty of artistic flair to any drab room in seconds.
  • NO HEAT IS PRODUCED. As mentioned, traditional halogen bulbs output a considerable amount of heat. With LED bulbs, you don’t have to worry about that. They stay cool to the touch, which is particularly beneficial for those who live in a home with small, curious children.
  • LONG LIFE. Most LED lights have a minimum rating of 20,000 hours as opposed to the 1,000 hours, give or take, that traditional bulbs offer. In this way, you can reduce costs by not having to constantly replace the bulbs.
  • LOW MAINTENANCE. There is no upkeep needed for this type of light, and they are easy to simply screw into place.

Yes, the length of our pendant lights can be adjusted. They each come on long cords and cables that give you more to work with, ideal for large and small rooms alike. We recommend that you have a qualified electrician make these adjustments.

Pendant lights are a simple and quick way to add luxurious accent lighting to any space.
