Great Mirror Lighting Ideas

Bathroom lights offer plenty of opportunity for practical and beautiful illumination that often goes overlooked. One of the easiest ways to incorporate lighting unique to your bathroom is through LED mirror lights. Bathroom mirror lights not only provide more practical task lighting, but they also beautify and modernize the space.

What Is an LED Mirror Light?

LED mirror lighting is an over mirror light that shines illumination right in front of the mirror. Some varieties can often wash the wall below with some additional illumination. This type of light gives you the perfect level of illumination for completing standard bathroom tasks, such as:

  • Putting on makeup
  • Shaving
  • Various tasks that you need to complete in front of the mirror

Light can be cast across the entire room using a ceiling light, of course, but they can often cause shadows if not installed at the proper height. When you use a wall light over a mirror, you are directing the light in a dedicated area from a source right in front of you. This ensures that it won’t cast any shadows on your face. The result is a more accurate representation of the way that natural light will hit your face to ensure your makeup looks how it is supposed to, for instance.

What Colour of Light Should You Use For Mirror Lighting?

LED lights are versatile in that they come in many different lighting colours for you to choose from. The light temperatures of LED lights are indicated in units Kelvin, often represented as a “K.” The Kelvin ratings indicate the warmth or coolness of the white light that an LED bulb emits. The higher the Kelvin rating, the cooler the light; the lower the Kelvin rating, the warmer the light.

In domestic settings such as home bathroom mirror lighting, warm white lights are recommended. The most common of these warm lights is 3000k warm white. It is gentle on the eyes while still being bright and clear enough for you to easily see while also giving the room a warmer, more welcoming feeling. Beyond this, this type of light better matches any of the traditional halogen lighting that you may already have in the room. To this effect, it is also good for layering lights.

However, some people prefer cooler white light in their bathrooms, which is fine. Keep in mind that you need to choose one or the other, as not doing so will create a rather harsh effect.

How Bright Are LED Mirror Lights?

Unlike other types of light bulbs, LED lights and their brightness are referred to as lumens instead of wattages. In order to translate that into real life examples, the general rule for this is that one watt of LED light is the same as a light with 80 to 100 lumens. This means:

  • A 3 watt LED bulb shines a light that is equivalent to a 25-30 watt halogen light bulb.
  • A 5 watt LED bulb shines a light that is equivalent to a 45-50 watt halogen light bulb.
  • A 9 watt LED bulb shines a light that is equivalent to a 60 watt halogen light bulb.

You should be choosing your LED mirror lights to complement any other lights in the room. The brightness that you choose should be proportionate to the other lighting around it. How many bulbs you intend to have in your light fixture will also dictate just how many bulbs are needed.

Are LED Mirror Lamps Energy Efficient?

LED bulbs are quite energy efficient. As opposed to halogen lights that turn 90 percent of their energy into heat, LED bulbs transform 70 percent of their energy into illumination. They use much less electricity than incandescent lighting, which changes the way that these lights produce their illumination. To put it into context, it only takes a 6 watt LED bulb to generate the same level of illumination as a 40 watt incandescent bulb.

Because LEDs are much more efficient in using energy to create light, they are known as energy efficient. This type of energy efficiency makes them especially popular in homes and hotels alike due to the way this lowers energy bills. Their energy efficiency can not only save you money on bills, but it is better for the environment as well.

It is thought that for each traditional light bulb you replace with an LED bulb, you’ll be saving approximately 5 kilograms of CO2 emissions. When you replace all of the lights in your house with LED bulbs, this amounts to approximately 63 kilograms of CO2 emissions saved.

Dressing room mirror lights can indeed be installed in any bathroom, but because of the moisture in the bath, it is important that you pay attention to two things: the zone of the bathroom where you intend to place it and the IP rating of such a light.

The IP rating, or Ingress Protection rating, is an indicator used to tell the resistance of a light to debris and water. The first number in an IP rating indicates the way that solid debris interacts with the light, such as dust. The second number, which is what’s important to pay attention to when installing a light above mirror, is the protection it offers against water damage.

It is crucial that you pay attention to the IP rating of a bathroom light since the environment is often wet or humid. You should aim for a minimum IP44 rating but opt for an IP65 or IP67 rating when possible just to be extra safe.

Below are the liquid ingress ratings for you to get familiar with:

Level 1 – offers protection against any dripping water

Level 2 – offers protection against dripping water when the water is at an angle of 15 degrees

Level 3 – offers protection against any spraying water

Level 4 – offers protection against any splashing water

Level 5 – offers protection against jet water

Level 6 – offers protection against powerful, forceful jet water

Level 7 – offers protection against immersed lights as deeply as one meter

Level 8 – offers protection against immersed lights deeper than one meter

As for the bathroom zones, each one indicates the types of lights that you can include in various areas of the bathroom. Below are the zoning areas in a bathroom:

Zone 0 – This area is found inside the bath or shower and will require a rating of IP67.

Zone 1 – This area is the space right above the bath or shower at a height of 2.25 meters from the floor. It will need a rating of IP45.

Zone 2 – This zone in the bathroom covers a 0.6-meter perimeter positioned around the shower and bath and will need a rating of IP64.

Zone 3 – This zone covers of any area outside of the zones mentioned above. While it doesn’t require a special IP rating, a minimum rating of IP44 is highly recommended.

To safely install a vanity mirror light in your bathroom, it needs to be installed in zone 3. Generally speaking, so long as the mirror lamp or wall light above mirror is placed more than 600 millimeters away from a source of water, you can use it anywhere. This means that it can be used in a bathroom near the sink so long as it is properly mounted away from the faucet below to prevent any water from touching it.

LED lights are famous for their long lasting lives. High quality LED bulbs such as CREE and Osram brands are capable of yielding up to 20,000 hours of light before they need to be replaced. To put that in context, running a wall light above mirror for six hours per day means you can enjoy it for up to 10 years. Compare this to other popular light bulbs:

  • Incandescent bulbs last only 1,000 hours.
  • Halogen bulbs burn for 2,000 hours.
  • ICF bulbs don’t last any longer than 15,000 hours.

These LED mirror lights do not have any switches built into them. Instead, the lights all need to be wired back to an external switch on the wall. This is something that should be carefully thought of and planned out before installing the light. If you want to make the mirror lights an elegant addition to the space, you can attach the lights to a motion sensor. This will allow the light to turn on automatically when you walk into the room. This is also a good way to make the most out of the energy efficiency of LED bulbs, as they will automatically turn off when you leave the room; you won’t have to remember to do that yourself.

LED lights deal with electricity. Because of this, it is unwise for you to tinker with them and try to install them yourself. You run the risk of electrocuting yourself if you don’t know what you’re doing. You should always hire a qualified, professional electrician to handle this for you.

LED above mirror lights are a surefire way to add both visual appeal and functionality to your bathroom. With lights directly over a mirror, you can get ready for your day without any shadows being cast onto your face. LED lights are more energy efficient than other bulbs, so you can trust them to run for tens of thousands of hours longer on top of it. So long as you choose an LED light with a proper IP rating and place it in the correct area of the bathroom, these lights will serve your needs for years to come without having to concern yourself with maintenance or frequent replacements.
