What is Commercial Lighting

Commercial electric lighting is the light fixtures and systems designed to be used in non-residential commercial spaces. This often includes hospitals, office spaces, hotels, educational buildings, restaurants and other such spaces.

This type of lighting can be indoor or outdoor, depending on where illumination is needed. Different fixtures are used for different purposes, just like in residential lighting.

Commercial office lighting plays several roles that improve upon the aesthetics and functionality of a commercial building. It also helps ensure that the building is under proper lighting safety regulations. This includes:

• Lighting up the work or retail space
• Making the area more visible
• Enhancing the safety of an area
• Creating attractive ambiance and atmosphere
• Promoting energy efficiency

Where Would Industrial Lighting Be Used?

Industrial lighting refers to industrial buildings and their applications. This type of lighting is important for many reasons, including safety and productivity first and foremost. You can find industrial LED lighting in various locations. These include:

  • DISTRIBUITON CENTERS AND WAREHOUSES – Storage and distribution centres require ample lighting for order picking, inventory management and general logistics. Lighting helps optimize storage spaces while ensuring accurate identification of products and increasing the safety of workers.
  • MANUFACTURING PLANTS – Commercial lighting fixtures are important in plants for completing assembly line, quality control, equipment operation tasks and more. It not only provides ample visibility, but it also makes the space safer for employees.
  • WORKSHOPS – Any sort of workshop, such as metal fabrication, auto repair, woodworking and beyond, benefits from commercial lighting as it makes it easier to see the finer details.
  • PROCESSING PLANTS AND FACTORIES – Industrial lighting is used here to ensure safe operations of machines, production line monitoring, equipment maintenance and more.
  • INDUSTRIAL OUTDOOR SPACES Commercial LED outdoor lighting is commonly used in spaces such as loading docks, shipping yards, parking lots, and other outdoor areas where brightness is important. Commercial outdoor lighting makes the area safer by enhancing visibility and deterring access by unauthorized guests or intruders.
  • REFINERIES AND POWER PLANTS – Power plants, chemical processing facilities and oil refineries use commercial lighting to make it easier for workers to see while operating complex machinery. It is also important for monitoring critical processes and ensuring that all work is done within safety regulations.
  • FOOD PROCESSING – Industrial lighting promotes better cleanliness and hygiene in food processing buildings. It also provides ample lighting to prevent cross-contamination and keep everything in line with food safety standards.
  • EXTRACTION AND MINING SITES – In underground tunnels, mining operations and extraction sites, industrial and commercial exterior lighting is used to create a safer environment with better visibility for workers. It makes it easier to navigate difficult terrain and operate machinery more safely.
  • STADIUMS AND SPORTS ARENAS – Sports venues need efficient, powerful lighting for the purpose of illuminating playing fields, enhancing visibility in the spectator areas and anywhere else the public goes.

Why Should You Use LEDs For Commercial Lighting?

LED commercial office lighting is the most common type of office lighting. As traditional bulbs fade into obsoletion, LED bulbs are there to take their place. There are many reasons why commercial settings benefit from LED bulbs. A few of the most prominent reasons include:

  • ENERGY SAVING LIGHTING – When you have so many lights constantly operating, it is important that you are making the most of the energy spent. LED lighting outputs almost all of its energy as light, as opposed to traditional bulbs that largely output heat.
  • LOWER CARBON FOOTPRINT – With less energy being consumed, you can lessen the environmental impact that your building has on the environment. This is especially good for businesses who like to make claims about their green operations.
  • LOWER ENERGY BILLS – Similarly, less energy consumption means you will be paying less on your electric bills as well. When you have so many other costs to work into your budget, this can really help.
  • VERSATILE – LED bulbs come in a wide variety of colour temperatures and lumen levels. This allows business owners to easily choose the brightness and general mood of the lighting.
  • SILENT – Gone are the days of industrial areas having an annoying hum or buzzing sound all the time. LED bulbs are quiet when they operate and won’t pose a distraction.
  • DIRECTIONAL LIGHTING – Since LED lights are directional, you can point the light precisely where you want it and not waste it by shining it into areas where it is not needed. You can adjust the lights exactly where they should be to highlight certain areas or showcase product shelves.
  • SMART LIGHTING CAPABILITY – Like domestic lights, commercial lighting can also be hooked up to smart lighting systems to further make the space more convenient.

How LED Lighting Can Benefit Those in Offices and Workspaces

LED commercial lights can do far more than just making it easier to see. Studies have shown that well-lit office buildings can also have positive effects on the employees.

Employees tend to work better in well-lit environments, for one. Bright, cool colours can make people feel more alert and awake, so they pay better attention to details. This can help maximize employee productivity.

It may also have a positive effect on the mood. LED lights are able to mimic the appearance of natural lighting, which is important in office environments. Natural lighting is shown to boost the mood of those in its range, which can be important toward ensuring employee happiness and satisfaction.

This is especially important during the colder, darker months of the year. With already limited sunlight, SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder, is common. LED lights that are bright with a natural daylight temperature are a good way to offset this.

With LED lights, employees who deal with frequent headaches may enjoy fewer of them. LED lights are shown to reduce eye strain and headaches, which could mean a reduction in the number of sick days that your employees take.

Why is Natural Light Important When Planning a Commercial Lighting Installation?

Natural light is an important element of lighting design in commercial spaces. It is good for one’s health as well as the behavior of the body’s circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is what helps human bodies regulate their natural clocks and get good sleep.

Sunlight used to be the only source of light, and it determined the working and living hours of human beings. Once artificial lights came into play, they started to disrupt that. Lights being on well after sunset began to trick the body into thinking it needed to be alert, and that has been a problem ever since.

In an office environment, exposure to natural light can help regulate the circadian rhythm of your employees, making them feel more rested and productive. Morale levels may increase, and better health may be enjoyed, thanks to the body’s production of Vitamin D in response to natural sunlight. Natural light may also stimulate an employee’s productivity by making them feel happier and more awake.

There are a number of reasons why smart lighting is a good choice for your commercial buildings. Some of them include:

  • AUTOMATED LIGHTING CONTROL – When connected to a smart light system, you can dictate the times that the lights turn on and off. This can be scheduled for sunup or sundown, or scheduled for the various shifts that go on at the building.
  • LOWER YOUR COSTS – Having the lights on 24/7 such as in industrial buildings or hospitality settings can add up fast. With energy efficient LED lighting, you can be sure that you are using as little energy as possible and therefore costing your business less.
  • HIGHER NOI – By reducing the overall operating costs, you can enjoy a higher NOI, or net operating income.
  • LIGHT UP BASED ON OCCUPANCY – You can set the light to turn on only when people are in the room, furthering its efficiency and cost-reducing nature.
  • LOWERS THE CABLE COUNT – With smart lighting, you will have less worry about keeping all of those cables and wires hidden and out of the way.
  • AUTOMATICALLY CONTROL SPECIFIC DEVICES – Instead of turning on every single light in the facility at once, you can use smart lighting to only operate what needs to be used at any given time.
  • LOWER MAINTENANCE – Especially in industrial settings where maintenance and operation are commonly checked, LED lights can save you plenty of time. Since they need little to no maintenance, you won’t have to incorporate them into your daily maintenance schedule.
  • RETAIL BUYING HABITS – In shops, proper lighting can affect the way your customers shop. With good lighting over certain product areas, you can direct attention to where you want it to go.
  • GOOD AMBIENCE IN CONFERENCE ROOMS – Meeting spaces can be made more comfortable and inviting when you choose the right lighting for the job. This can also make the meetings more productive overall.

LED colour temperature refers to the light’s warmth or coolness. It exists on a scale of degrees Kelvin, with lower Kelvin ratings being warmer and higher ratings being cooler. When it comes to commercial spaces like offices, it is generally recommended that you have cool lighting.

In the general office area, cool white colour lighting is a good choice. Anywhere between 3000k and 4000k puts you between cool white and daylight colours.

In the employee break room, you can include natural lighting to help wake employees up. You could also incorporate warmer lights if you want to make the area a more relaxing place. In the corridor connecting the two areas, it is recommended that you use lights between 3000k and 4000k.

When it comes to industrial buildings such as warehouses, it is generally recommended that you use cooler lighting temperatures. Cool light colours between 4000k and 5000k are generally preferred in these areas.

It has been shown that lights in this range reduce the strain on eyes and help maintain productivity in a workspace. It may also make it easier to clearly see details, which can make the environment safer for your workers.
